LLM Arena (now branded "Arena") is a public, crowdsourced AI-model evaluation platform: submit a prompt, receive answers from two anonymous AI models side by side, vote on the better response, and the votes feed a community leaderboard ranking AI models by human preference.

Overview

LLM Arena — launched in 2023 as "Chatbot Arena" (a UC Berkeley research project), rebranded "LMArena" at lmarena.ai in September 2024, and now branded "Arena" (its site titles itself "Arena AI: The Official AI Ranking & LLM Leaderboard", also reachable at arena.ai). In Battle Mode, two anonymous models respond to a prompt, the user votes, and model names are revealed only after voting; only anonymous votes count toward the official rankings. Side by Side Mode compares named models (votes feed research, not rankings); Direct Mode lets users interact with specific models without voting.

Rankings use the Bradley–Terry rating system with style-control adjustments. Arenas cover text chat, image, video, search (Search Arena), web development (WebDev Arena), and repo-aware coding (RepoChat Arena). Codenamed pre-release models appear for community testing. The platform open-sources datasets of organic human preference data (Hugging Face) and publishes its research methodology.

The public platform is free to use with no sign-up required for basic use, sustained by a paid enterprise "AI Evaluations" service (contact-sales only — no official dollar figures). Privacy note (per the official site): conversations may be shared with AI providers and in de-identified public research datasets — avoid entering sensitive information.
